We all have a lot more time on our hands these days. Whether you’re working or on quarantine vacation, finding ways to fill your time is becoming more important than ever before. I personally have been trying to learn new things, read more, and of course focus on self care. Self care is honestly SO important during quarantine. These are stressful times. We all miss our friends and family. You may be experiencing financial uncertainty, or be worried about loved ones. So in all the craziness, finding time for YOU is essential. I personally used to love a good spa day to unwind. So during quarantine, why not have a DIY spa day at home? It’s easier to do than you think! If you’re willing to get a tad creative, you can make our own epic home spa treatments straight from home and pantry.
Although many of us won’t be able to spend Mother’s Day with our mom’s this year, that shouldn’t stop us from spoiling them with extra attention and a little creativity to make the holiday special. Invite your mom, sisters and friends to create masks together (recipes below) and have a champagne toast before heading off to your individual pampering sessions! Then turn off Zoom and indulge in a bubble bath in your at home Zen {bathroom} Retreat.
How To Have A DIY Spa Day At Home
All spas have this quality of making you feel relaxed the moment you step inside. So setting the stage is essential for a successful spa day at home. Here’s how to set up your house before you can dive into your home spa experience:
Clean Up
Can you relax in a cluttered room? Didn’t think so. A disorganized room can add clutter to your mind which is the exact opposite of what you want for your spa day. So clean up really quick or at least clear the space you plan to use for your spa day. It is important to create a clean and orderly space to keep you relaxed and stress-free.
Set the Mood & Create a Relaxing Setting
Get the vibe right for your home spa. Light scented candles, dim the lights, play soft, soothing music, and get the essential oils going. I think the aroma of the essential oils like mint, lavender, etc. are the best for spa settings. If you want to be super extra about it, you could even get some crystals to get good energy and feel like you’re in a spa.
Have Your Treatments Ready
You don’t want to have to stop in the middle of your home spa experience to grab the things you need. So before you dive into the spa day, make sure you have everything you need. If you plan to give yourself a facial, have everything organized. If you’re taking a bath, have the bubbles and everything you need set aside. Keep your spa treatment schedule in mind too so you keep things moving.
Pour Yourself A Drink
Drinks are always a welcome treat at the spa. Whether it’s water, tea, or booze, I say bring it on. You can decide which you prefer, but chamomile or jasmine tea could be nice. Slice some cucumber – to be used on your eyes later of course – for some cucumber water. You could try any infused water really. Or just say screw it and poor yourself a glass of champagne or rosè. Obviously this is my preference. I’m currently sipping Up Root Wines which is my friend Jay’s winery. The bottles are chic and the wine is amazing.
Spa Treatments You Can Do At Home
Obviously giving yourself a massage might be tough. But there are still tons of beauty treatments you can do 100% by yourself. Think full body exfoliation treatments, facials, hair masks, baths, stretching, etc. You can buy some scrubbers and exfoliate your entire body with a scrub. Or buy some bath bombs and take a healing and hydrating bath. Facial massage with ice rollers or jade rollers are great. There are tons of facials, masks, and spa techniques you can set up and try at home. There is a lot you can do. I personally recommend making yourself a little schedule and setting everything up beforehand. Then move through your spa day for what makes sense for you. You can get a lot of the items spas use on Amazon or even at the grocery store.
I’m personally obsessed with Hear Me Raw products right now. They are eco-friendly and they smell AMAZING.
Here are a few items I recommend you use in your home spa day:
How To Work A Massage Into Your Home Spa Day
If you’re like me and LOVE massages, you can make this happen too. The best way to do this is to just order yourself a home massage tool or chair. Some are handheld, some you sit on, some are even chairs that can reach your entire back. Home massage tools have come a long way recently. There are some awesome ones out there. Here are a few of my favorites:
Add Facial Steam
Facial steam is a great way to relax, de-stress, and cleanse the pores as well. It helps promote clear and glowing skin. Different essential oils are recommended for different skin types such as tea-tree oil for acne-prone skin, lavender oil for oily skin or rose absolute oil for dry skin.
Pour hot water in a large bowl and add fresh herbs such as lavender or rosemary. You can also use a few drops of essential oils of your choice instead of fresh herbs. Lean over the bowl with a medium-sized towel draped over your head to trap the steam. Breathe in the steam for at least 10 minutes.
You can also use a facial steamer like this one.
DIY Spa Treatment Recipes You Can Make at Home
You can also totally make your own spa treatment with things you have around the house. You would actually be surprised that spas use a lot of common ingredients during their treatments. This is also the time where you can have fun with your Mom and loved ones on Mother’s Day! Do a Zoom call and prepare these treatments together! It’s a fun way to get everyone in the family involved before sending mom to serious relaxation in her mini zen retreat at home.
Below are a few recipes for easy spa treatments to throw together:
Hydrating Honey Hair Mask
If your hair has been through a lot of stress from curling, flat ironing, coloring, blow-drying, etc. then this is the break that it needs to bring back lost moisture.
Combine 1/4 cup honey, 1/4 cup coconut oil and 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar in a microwave-friendly jar. Heat in the microwave for a few seconds. You can use it right away or store it. If you decide to use it after storing, you may need to stir it again before popping it into the microwave oven for a few seconds.
Using your hands, apply the hair mask from roots to tips. Let the mask sink in for 20 to 30 mins by wrapping your hair in a towel. You can do other DIY treatments or enjoy a bubble bath while waiting for the mask to work its wonders.
Sweet Avocado Face Mask
Avocados are known to have healthy fats that can do wonders to your skin. This natural face mask is just as good as any commercial sheet mask.
Add 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder to a quarter of a ripe avocado. Mash it in a small bowl, then stir them all together. Apply the mask to your clean face and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse well with warm water using a wash cloth. You can also try avocado with honey & olive oil. Love that combo too!
Lymphatic Drainage With Oils
Give yourself an easy lymphatic drainage massage using natural oils like jojoba, grapeseed, olive oil, coconut oil, or almond oil. Honestly anything you have around the house. If you have any serums in your skincare cabinet you can use those too.
Apply oil to your hands then massage your face using gentle upward circular motions to boost circulation. Facial massage helps nourish the skin for a youthful and soft complexion.
Turmeric Eye Mask
If you are tired of looking at dark under-eye circles, here is an easy and super effective remedy. It also takes about two seconds to make which is nice.
Combine 2 teaspoons of turmeric and 3 teaspoons of pineapple juice to form a paste. You can also try turmeric and buttermilk ( see here ). Apply the mixture under your eyes with extra care, and let it sit for around 10 to 15 minutes. Note: Avoid leaving it on longer than the recommended time or the turmeric might leave color on your skin. Wash off the paste with warm water. You can do it regularly for best results.
Simple Sugar Scrub
There’s no beauty treatment simpler than this sugar scrub. Plus, all the ingredients might just be in your pantry. This body scrub is so easy to make but is super effective for scrubbing away dead skin while leaving your body soft, silky, and moisturized.
Mix a quarter cup of brown or white sugar with a quarter cup of coconut oil. Massage your mixture onto your damp skin in the bath or shower, then rinse off after all areas have been scrubbed. You can also try sugar with egg. The beauty benefits of egg are insane, see HERE.
What are your favorite ways to pamper yourself at home?
I hope you liked these DIY Spa treatments and that this post help you relax at home. If you’ve got some new ones to share, please comment below. I’m always looking for ways to up my beauty routine. Even if its not for a full spa day, but things I can work into my general routine too!
