How to Wear Neon to Work – a Quick Guide for Men & Women

Two weeks ago I received an email from a reader in Arizona. In her email, my lovely reader asked a crucial question: How do I incorporate neon into my ultra conservative work wear? Great question. I happen to love neon – I used to color with highlighters because they were the “brightest crayons ever”  but unfortunately these hues are not a fan favorite especially in the workplace.

So the answer depends on the conservative index of your workplace. Some work places have “color codes” where by you have to stick to a bland color palate. Can we say USSR? But if your workplace allows an ounce of wardrobe creativity, neon, when done right, can look ultra-chic and makes a bold statement in any meeting. Miami is the perfect city to rock these colors, so I have a few ideas up my sleeve to spice up any suiting situation. See what I did there. Let’s begin the neon journey.

Choose your Neon

hot pink

Hot pink wears well on most people and it is also the most transitional color. I would stay away from wearing hot pink with black unless you want to look like a walking bachelorette party. Hot pink pairs nicely with navy and dark grey. Pop this bright hue under a conservative suit with a silk scarf.

pinkIt’s super sexy when a guy wears hot pink. Although the color may not seem conservative for most men out there – you can always tone it down with a darker suit. Check out Thomas Pink’s Glover Plain Super Slim-fit Shirt it has a navy hummingbird print fabric inside the neck and cuff. I love Thomas Pink shirts for men because they always look conservative and elegant.

Choose your Ensemble

Neon lime is my favorite neon of all. Lime is so chic and is the most transitional color for Fall & Winter fashion. I pair this hue with blacks and light grey Above I am wearing Theory Louise Urban Stretch Pant in Charcoal  paired with an Elie Tahari Black Leather Blazer (this link is for a similar item).  The blouse is one of my favorites and although the fabric photographs like a yellow – the color is a true neon lime. I featured this blouse in another post you can find the details here.

Choose your Accessory

mens yellow

Highlighter Yellow. Love it!! Most people steer away from this color because it is just so loud, but you shouldn’t be afraid. Highlighter (aka neon yellow) is a trendy way to add a pop of color to your work wear.   A great way to transition to neon yellow is as an accent piece to a neutral palatte. A scarf for the ladies or trouser socks and suspenders for the men will spice up any suiting. Check out the Barney’s New York English Rib Scarf in Neon Yellow and the Neon Yellow Suspenders  from Accessory Yo.

These are just a few fun ways to wear neon in the workplace. How do you rock your favorite neon hue? Share your ideas below!
